Three Strategic Insights for Higher Education Leaders from Rational 360

• April 14, 2025

By Kate Bernstein

Rational 360 recently hosted higher education leaders for a salon breakfast discussion about how universities and research institutions can influence the new DC.

The discussion explored the shifting dynamics of federal policies and education reform, with a particular focus on how universities and research institutions can effectively engage with policymakers and stakeholders. Attendees discussed the importance of adapting public affairs strategies to address critical issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and research funding.

Expert insights were shared by Rational 360 Managing Directors Joe Lockhart and Lindsey Kolb, and Senior Vice President Ed Patru, with Senior Vice President Cassie Scher serving as the moderator. The panelists emphasized the necessity of tailored messaging and strategic communication to amplify institutional voices in an increasingly complex policy environment.

A key takeaway from the discussion was the need for higher education institutions to expand their media engagement beyond traditional channels to reach policymakers and decisionmakers in an era where trust in legacy media is declining, trust in influencers and new media is on the rise. The panel also highlighted our proprietary research on emerging voices within the administration and their growing role in shaping federal education policy.

As federal funding and education priorities continue to evolve, Rational 360 remains committed to helping universities and research institutions adapt, ensuring they have a strong voice in critical discussions.
